Formed from much of the country area of the Bristol Omnibus Company, the company quickly painted most of the fleet into the new colour scheme. All the photos are from 1986.

Towards the end of the NBC's life, North Devon was formed, cutting itself off from Western National.

SWT ran services in the western part of South Wales, based on the city of Swansea.

Formed from the remains of the old Sheffield United Tours fleet.
27th Feb 2005Provincial/Gosport and Fareham (19 images)
The green buses of this small concern ran down the peninsula between Gosport and Fareham. A fleet of Seddons was soon replaced by Leyland Nationals.

Once a BET concern, dominated by AECs, the company was almost swallowed by Western National under the NBC's control.

Another former BTC concern operating to the north of Leeds.

These two companies were combined by the NBC under the Western National banner, but were split again prior to the sale of the NBC. To save confusion, both are included here, as is the coaching arm, Royal Blue, prior to it becoming part of National Travel.

The red buses of PMT were to be found throughout much of Staffordshire. An interesting fleet was maintained.

West Riding was once Britain's largest independent, but sold out to the NBC after the Wulfrunian fiasco.

This mainly Bristol/ECW fleet was to be found almost anywhere between York and Berwick.

Covering a vast area of middle England, this former Tilling company employed a green livery. By 1986, Luton & District had been split off & a few pics are included here.

17th Jan 2005East Kent Road Car Company (79 images)
Occupying the eastern half of Kent, as the name suggests, East Kent always had a close relationship with its neighbour, Maidstone and District, both once being BET subsidiaries. Nevertheless, they were separate companies, with different liveries, though a joint numbering scheme was adopted by the NBC. Note that, prior to c1980, East Kent did not use fleet numbers.

Once owned by the BET, some Tilling influence came in with the takeover of Midland General. Indeed, a few Midland General photos are included here.
Trent was based in Derby.

The buses of this NBC subsidiary could be found throughout South Central England. Having absorbed Wilts and Dorset in the early years of the NBC, Hants and Dorset was split in two in the 1980s, to form Wilts and Dorset and Hampshire Bus. These two concerns will be featured here.

Covering much of the industrial north east, Northern General absorbed several subsidiaries such as Sunderland District and Tynemouth Omnibus, which will be included here. Thanks to Ian Hignett for the recent corrections.

A former BET operator running throughout Sussex, famous for its fully fronted Leyland PD3s. Brighton & Hove was split off from the main company around 1985 and is included here.

The area covered by this former BET operator once ranged from Manchester to Carlisle.
8th Jan 2005National Travel West (67 images)
Formed from the remains of such names as Standerwick, Shamrock and Rambler, National Travel NW and North Western Road Car, etc.
7th Jan 2005Midland Red (117 images)
The Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company, to give it its full title, was once Britain's biggest provincial bus company, even building its own buses. The West Midlands area services were lost to the PTE and, by 1985, the company was being hacked into four pieces. The new companies are included here.

The green buses of M and D were to be found throughout the western half of Kent. Hastings & District, formed around 1985, is also included.
3rd Jan 2005London Country Bus Services (130 images)
LCBS was formed when the Country Area services and Green Line routes of London Transport were taken over by the NBC.

An ex BTC subsidiary which ran throughout East Anglia.

The company was a lover of AECs and a hater of Leyland Nationals, with plenty of the former and none of the latter.

Prior to privatisation, several NBC companies were split into easily saleable chunks. In the '80s, Cambus was formed from the western half of Eastern Counties. An insipid light blue livery was adopted.

The red buses of this concern were to be found around Sheffield, Doncaster and Huddersfield, with the HQ being in Barnsley.

Operating mainly in Essex, the green liveried buses were a common sight in East London as well.

Another former BTC concern. It has a vast operating area, covering part of the North West of England and all of North Wales.

Welcome to my Fotopic Web Site, the National Bus Company from 1970 to 1986 inclusive. I really am very close to putting all my pictures on line now, but there may still be a few more photos to be found, especially since I've expanded the gallery to include 1986, the last year of the NBC.
